Backpacking Supplies
Backpacking and hiking are great fun and very enjoyable for people that enjoy the out-of-doors to get
away from "it all" for one or more camping days. There is more to preparation for your adventure than beginners and
some experienced outdoors individuals. The primary backing supplies necessary for your adventure are not many but
are very important.
First and foremost is selection of a backpack. Select a backpack that fits your needs. If your adventure is only a
day trek, a traditional backpack will fit your needs. If your plans are for several days at a time, you will need a
specialized backpack. There are several types to choose from being either an internal or external frame. However
you will need separate compartments and the backpack must be comfortable. I suggest you load the pack with items at
the store to determine how comfortable the pack will be. If you plan on using your backpack many times make your
purchase for a durable and comfortable backpack.
The second most important purchase is a Tent. This is your portable shelter while on you adventure. It must be
big enough for you but not too heavy. In backpacking, every ounce counts. Tents are rated on weather so if you are
plan to backpack in winter, make sure you select a tent rated for cold weather. Also if you always backpack with a
partner, the tent must be big enough for two people.
In conjunction with your tent, it is imperative you select a sleeping bag. The sleeping bag should have a
temperature rating of -10 degrees farenheit and should be a thick, down fillled bag made of synthetic
materials.
Clothing requires you are comfortable in any type weather condition. If backpacking in warm weather, clothing is
not a major concern. If your adventure is in cold weather you should wear several layers of clothing starting with
under-layer garments, breathable outer garments and ending with waterproof outer wear. It is imperative you stay
dry at all times. If you take extra clothing, place them in a plastic bag to keep them dry.
Since most of our body heat escapes through our head, select warm head gear, preferably with ear flaps. Gloves
are imperative in cold weather to keep your hands warm.
Boots are very important to protect your feet and to give you traction as you trek over rough terrain. Your
boots must be waterproof to keep your feet dry whether in rain or crossing streams. Your boots must be durable
since you do not want to re-purchase boots every year.
Buying a backpacking stove is necessary to have warm foot and drink on your adventure. Many forests and parks
prohibit building wood fires. Make sure you carry fuel so your stove is available at all times. Make sure your
stove is lightweight. You should consider pans for cooking, utensils and water, either bottled or water filtration
system.
Your standard emergency kit should include flashlight, radio, batteries, matches, fishing line and hooks. These
items must be placed in a waterproof bag to keep dry.
Good luck and have fun on your backpacking trek.
